Ley Lines

Ley lines are the divisions between modern day kingdoms. They are deep wells of divine energy that run like rivers under the ground. Because of the huge amount of energy contained, they act as a form of barrier to expansion. Kingdoms will never spread beyond these lines.

► Basics

Ley Lines

Forming after The Great Famine, Ley Lines are a magical phenomenon that appears throughout Diatatus. They are made of several parts; the line, the underground portion, and the magical effects they cause.

The Ley Line itself is a thin crack in the ground. This crack is very hard to closely observe, but it appears to stretch far beneath the topsoil. How far it reaches is, unfortunately, impossible to determine. Underneath the Ley Line is a well of unimaginable amount of magical energy. This part is known due to the effects that stretch far beyond the line itself. The area of effect varies (and in some cases is hard to determine) but in general, the effects begin in a mile radius.

► Effects caused by Ley Lines

Variable Weather

Settlers near Ley Lines report harsh conditions that change on a whim. These conditions include temperature fluctuations, earthquakes, tornados, and other natural disasters. This weather does not affect towns outside the Ley Line's radius, even if it seems that it should.

Reality Warping

The main barrier to expansion; armies, settlers, and even individual scouts become turned around and confused, even when the area crossed should be only a few miles. This effect was found quite quickly after the Gods died, and played a pivotal role in deciding where each kingdom's borders would be. The effect is selective, and the mechanisms are uknown. Some groups will reappear as soon as they leave, while others are missing for years. Sometimes they will even reappear on the opposite side of the Kingdom.

False Fae

False fae is a broad term for any beast that appears to have magic, some form of face/head covering, and is aggressive to people. These beasts appear near Ley Lines and attack on sight. Many forms of these beasts have been recorded, and many are killed as trophies.

There is only one type of false fae that is not agressive towards people, and as it can be found in areas away from Ley Lines, there are people who believe it to be a totally different type of creature altogether.

Some people theorize that the first fairies to wear masks modeled them after the false fae.
